    Description

3 Original Vietnamese War Snapshot Photos: Self-Immolated Buddhist Monk Direct from an estate collection of war photos is a set of three original 5.5" x 4" snapshot photos showing a Buddhist monk who has burned himself to death as a protest against the persecutions of Buddhists by the Diem government. Although there is no identifying information on the backs, and there were several self-immolations in Vietnam in 1963, I believe this is Ho Dan Van who burned himself to death on October 27, 1963. According to Wikipedia, dressed in civilian clothing, he was dropped off by a motorcyclist in front of a Roman Catholic cathedral in Saigon, where he squatted in a lotus-fashion, poured gasoline in his lap and struck a match. The statues shown appear consistent with a Roman Catholic church.
