    Dorothy Dandridge was African-American film and theatre actress, singer and dancer. She is
    perhaps best known for being the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award for
    Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the 1954 film
    Carmen Jones,
    co-starring
    Harry Belafonte.  Also nominated for a Golden Globe for
    Porky and Bess
    (1959), starring opposite
    Sidney Poitier. Sadly Dandridge died young, age 42, of a drug overdose.
