Description
Handsome fold-out 1942 Esso Colonial Beacon road map of the metropolitan New York City area, printed more than 75 years ago.The map opens to 25" x 23" and has great detail on old street and highway alignments, with cartography by the General Drafting Company.
The coverage area extends from New Brunswick, New Jersey to Suffolk County, and north to West Point and Danbury, Connecticut.
On the reverse side there is an inset of Manhattan and a map of New York City showing automobile routes through the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn, along with ferry crossings on the Hudson and East Rivers.
The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel is shown as "under construction." Work had started two years before this map was drawn, but World War II brought a halt to construction and the tunnel did not open to traffic until 1950.
This map was published by the Colonial Beacon Oil Company to promote its Esso gasoline and motor oil. The photograph on the front cover shows the George Washington Bridge.
The map is dated 1942 by reference to the Petroleum Map Catalog on the website of the Road Map Collectors Association.
Condition:
It is in very good, lightly used condition, bright and clean, with
no
rips, tears, or writing. Colonial Beacon's Touring Service has marked a route on the regional map and stamped the mileage on the upper edge of the front cover. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
